Lawmakers Adjourn Session Without Reaching Compromise on Abortion Ban PDF Print E-mail
Written by Deirdra Harris Glover
Friday, 31 March 2006

I've been on and off the phone with the capitol all day, as has Felicia Brown, Planned Parenthood's Grassroots Coordinator.

They've adjourned the session.  No compromise was reached regarding SB 2922, and so (for now) the various incarnations of the abortion ban have died.  I fully expect to see it raise its ugly head again next year.

We made such a huge impact this year: the Mississippi chapter of the ACLU, NOW's chapter here in Jackson, Planned Parenthood's burgeoning coalition, concerned citizens, healthcare professionals, and members of the clergy.  We are powerful when we work together, and I hope we'll continue to regularly meet before next year's session to discuss strategy and action.  I certainly hope some of you who are inclined will help me expand this site to be a true resource for our cause.

Many of us are attending the Civil Liberties and Public Policy's 20th Annual Reproductive Rights Conference.  We'll be bringing back excellent ideas to share with all of you.  Jackson Area NOW is hosting a lunch on April 2nd for area activists to meet national NOW VPs, as well as a strategic meeting on April 15th  to discuss fundraising as well as Operation Save America's national rally here in Jackson.  The Mississippi ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Coalition meets every third Thursday of the month (next meeting is April 20th.)  If there's any other pro-choice organizations in Mississippi, please direct them to me: I'm happy to give them free advertising here.

Thanks again to everyone who raised their voices and pens in this matter.
